Nero d’Avola Grape Variety

The Nero d’Avola grape variety is officially known as Calabrese but as it is cultivated primarily in Sicily and the Sicilians call it Avola after a Sicilian town, it is known to the world as the Nero d’Avola. Obviously, it is used primarily in making red Sicilian wines. Wine made from this grape are either dry or slightly acidic and have peppery or plum flavours and a fruity bouquet.

We visit wineries, restaurants and other highlights to give you the information you need to plan a great trip to Italy. We can design itineraries, advise on bookings and show you the Italy that the tour companies don’t tell you about.
