Amarone DOCG

Amarone is a wine with DOCG status from the Veneto. Produced within the area known as Valpolicella near Verona, this wonderful red has a special twist in its production as it is made using the appassimento method. After harvest, normally around October, the grapes are air dried for several months to concentrate the sugars. Wine production itself cannot start before the first of December – usually it starts in January or February – producing a wine with a minimum alcohol level of 14% although 15% is more typical.

Corvina and Corvinone generally make up the majority of the blend, anywhere from 45% to 95%. The Corvinone cannot make up more than half that amount. Rondinella adds another smaller percentage to the blend. Other varieties such as Croatina, Oseleta, Molinara, and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to name can be used in small quantities.
