Enoteca is an Italian word which is used to describe a regional or local wineshop. The word derives from the Greek and means nothing more than wine repository. A traditional enoteca exists primarily to give visitors or tourists a chance to sample locally produced wines and to buy them at a reasonable price. An enoteca is usually run by or in conjunction with local wine producers.

Increasingly, restaurants are styling themselves as enoteche but in reality if they don’t focus on local wines then they’re nothing more than a restaurant selling wine.
