DOCG or Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita is the highest certification given to Italian wines made from grapes produced in the best growing areas and produced according to specified methods. Introduced in 1980, wines that have received this accolade can be identified by the label around either the neck of the bottle or over the cork. There are currently 75 areas with this accreditation.
